Last week, China stunned the aviation world with images and footages of two flying stealthy, high-performance sixth-generation crewed combat aircraft, imagery of which began to emerge on 26 December, 2024. These are the most advanced flying machines we have seen out of China so far, lacking any tails and packing stealth and long range.
.
The first aircraft that appeared is assumed to be under development by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC), has a diamond-shaped planform with a modified delta wing with chine lines extending all the way to the nose area and three engines, and has now been reported — albeit unconfirmed — as the J-36.
.
Another Chinese next-generation fighter also emerged on the same day, and like the J-36, features a tailless configuration, but this model is equipped with two engines. This aircraft is believed to be under development by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) and some media has unofficially dubbed it “J-50”. Though the video and several photos of this J-50 are fewer in number and of inferior quality compared to the ones that emerged of the J-36 (making it harder to determine particular details), I have attempted to give an impression of what this second next-generation fighter aircraft dubbed Shenyang J-50, could eventually look like and what its capabilities could be.
